CHAPTER NINE

Jared texted Christy early in the morning and asked how she was doing. It was a good hour before she answered.

A little sunburnt. LOL! Not too bad. We had a great time. Sorry about my breakdown. Feeling better today.

He typed a reply but paused. How would she take it? Was he being too pushy? Would she be turned off or offended? He closed his eyes and thought about it. He was certain it was the right thing to do. Even if he had no intention of taking things farther between them—and that oath was getting harder by the day—he knew this was right. He hit send and held his breath. He couldn’t hold it long enough though. The dots lit up, blinked for a few seconds, and then disappeared. It was another hour before she answered. By then, it was almost too late.

We’d like to take you up on your offer. Are we too late? Where and what time?

Another hour passed. Jared’s hands were sweaty, as was every other part of his body, as he stood outside in the blistering heat. The weather was a far cry from the day before with extreme heat and thunderstorms in the forecast, and Jared didn’t think even being in the water could help cool him off. Luckily, as soon as Christy and Molly arrived, they would be able to get inside where the air conditioning was on full blast.

When he saw them approaching, it was all he could do to keep his eyes from popping out of his head. Christy was wearing a modest dress, yellow with faint flowers. It flowed around her in a way that made it look like she traveled with her own breeze, though the air was still and heavy. Her hair was neatly braided in one long line down her back, and she had on just a touch of makeup. She couldn’t have looked more beautiful.

Molly was wearing a dark blue dress covered with daisies, her hair done in two long braids, one on each side, and she wore a smile on her face, for which he was glad. He wasn’t sure Molly was going to be happy about this strange outing, so different from the day before. He knew how he would have felt, did feel, at her age.

The church bell rang as Christy and Molly reached him. “Just in time,” he said. “Let’s see if we can find seats.”

He led the way, stopping in the back and craning his neck for a pew with enough room for the three of them. An usher leaned over and pointed out a pew on the far left, near the front. Jared thanked him and motioned to Christy to go ahead. He followed the two females to the pew and motioned for them to sit. Jared genuflected before sliding in and unfolding the kneeler. As he’d been taught to do as a toddler, he knelt and prayed before taking his seat beside Molly.

He was nervous about how they would react.
